The foodshare Pantry

an award winning project dedicated to protecting the environment by Preventing food waste & supporting our rural communities in the vale of of glamorgan to access good, affordable food.

What is Foodshare?

Our FoodShare Pantry is a project that is open to all and aims to prevent food insecurity and food waste.  Many people living in the rural Vale of Glamorgan find it difficult to access cost effective food and healthy options.  At FoodShare Pantry Llantwit Major our local community can join us each week to top up their weekly shop at a fraction of supermarket prices, while also doing their bit to stop surplus food going to landfill.

We have an amazing team of loyal volunteers and our pantry has proudly become a social hub for many in the community.  We share healthy and seasonal recipes and partner with local organisations and projects, signposting customers to advice services that may be useful to them.  There is no eligibility criteria for shopping with us so whether you are experiencing a need to access food or would like to help stop food waste, everyone is welcome.

FoodShare Pantry Llantwit Major is funded and supported by GVS, The Vale of Glamorgan Council, Public Health Wales and The Moondance Foundation.  As well as purchasing food ourselves to restock the pantry directly from the weekly £5 that our customers pay, food is sourced from:

  • FareShare Cymru who receive in date pre-Supermarket food ‘waste’

  • FareShare Go which enables us to collect end of day supermarket waste, from Tesco and Waitrose stores, that is past it’s best before date but still perfectly edible

  • Our local Co-op supermarkets

  • In Kind Direct, a charity that sells hygiene goods to other registered charities

  • Local producers

  • Individual donations

Where and when does Foodshare take place?

The pantry is open every Thursday at CF61, between 12 and 2pm, and for £5 our customers can choose items totalling at least 4 times this value from our fridges, freezers and shelves, as well as fresh fruit, vegetables and end of day bakery items.

How does Foodshare work?

If you’d like to shop at the pantry, please contact us to book and you will then be allocated a 10 minute time slot at the next available session. When you arrive, please join the queue and you’ll be greeted by one of our volunteers at the welcome desk who will help you.

Each shop costs £5 and there is only one shop per household, per week allowed. Our customers choose one item from the fridge, one item from the freezer, six from the shelves, and are then able to select a fair share of the fruit, vegetables and bakery items that we have available that week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any criteria for signing up to shop at the Foodshare Pantry?

No, everyone is welcome to shop with us, regardless of their circumstances.

Can my partner and I both register to shop?

To give everyone in our community the same opportunity, we only allow one shop per household per week, across both FoodShare locations.

Do I need to be referred for Foodshare?

No, anyone can access the FoodShare Pantry.

How do I pay?

We accept payment by cash or card at our Llantwit Pantry, and cash only at our St Athan Pantry. Payment is to be made on arrival.

Can you accommodate allergies?

The items we have available are dependent on what surplus we receive each week. We do stock a range of products and often have gluten free bakery items and plant based milk, for example. However, we are unable to confirm that loose packed items have not been in contact with, or do not contain allergens, due to the nature of our supply chain. Please do not take these items if this is a concern for you.
